Double Crested Cormorant
Original oil on 20x20 inch gallery wrapped canvas, varnished.
Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) are medium to large birds known for their long necks, hooked bills, and striking black plumage, which features double crests during breeding season. Found across North America, they thrive in diverse habitats such as coastal areas, lakes, and rivers, often nesting in colonies. Excellent divers, these birds primarily feed on fish but also consume amphibians and invertebrates, frequently seen drying their wings after diving since their feathers aren’t waterproof. While their populations fluctuated due to hunting and habitat loss, they have rebounded thanks to conservation efforts. However, in some regions, they are viewed as a nuisance, prompting management strategies to control their numbers.
