Chipmonks are easily recognized by the alternating light and dark stripes running down their backs and faces, and they possess large internal cheek pouches that can expand to three times the size of their heads to transport nuts, seeds, and insects. These active, daytime animals construct complex underground burrow systems up to 30 feet long where they store food and spend the winter in periods of torpor or shallow hibernation. As omnivores and expert seed dispersers, chipmunks play an important role in forest ecosystems, though they typically only live two to three years in the wild.
