Sandhill cranes are large, elegant wading birds recognized by their tall gray bodies, long slender legs, and bright red skin patches on their crowns. Known for their elaborate, bounding mating dances and iconic, bugling calls that can carry for miles, these monogamous birds mate for life. While northern populations are famous for their massive, V-shaped migratory flocks, a non-migratory subspecies, the Florida sandhill crane, resides in the state year-round, foraging for seeds, insects, and small vertebrates in freshwater marshes and open grasslands.
